2023 World Championship Team Selection Information
I am pleased to have been selected to be the United States Veteran’s Rifle Team Captain for the 2023 World Championships in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Thanks to Robert Mead, U.S. Palma Team Captain we have already been able to establish a portion of the plan for team development and selection.
We have named two team officers at this point: J P Young, Adjutant, Peter LaBerge, Head Coach.
From an overview perspective we plan two practices/evaluations per year. The first two have been planned: 1) September 5-6, 2019 in Raton, New Mexico; 2) May 9-10, 2020 in Butner, North Carolina. We anticipate conducting practices/evaluations at those two locations, as well as Lodi, Wisconsin, Ottawa, Ontario (Connaught Ranges), and in Bloemfontein. Additionally, we will commission Team matches in other major competitions that will be recorded and added to the data collected on each prospective team member. It should be noted that prospective team members do not have to attend all potential practices/evaluations. However, you should be making a commitment to make a majority of them.
Shooters will be evaluated based upon several criteria: 1) Coached elevation, 2) Team performance (evaluation by the coaches and team officers), and 3) Historical performance in International competitions. All will be weighed and evaluated by the Coaches and Team Officers.
Team Coaches will be evaluated by Peter LaBerge, Head Coach. He will have the final say in selecting the coaches for the World Championship Match.
Fund raising will become an important consideration during the next four years. The cost of transporting and supporting a team of nineteen participants will be significant. To that end we will need everyone’s assistance to seek sponsors. Any good ideas, or rich uncles will be appreciated.
If you will be sixty years old by April 2023 you would be eligible to become a member of the Veteran’s Rifle Team. If you are not yet a qualified member of the U.S. National Rifle Team, opportunities will be arranged to allow you to qualify.
